WALKING

There are many footpaths and trails, many of them marked and some suitable for mountain bikes.  Forest is interspersed with Alpine meadows where flowers are superb in Spring before the hay is cut.  From the ridge that runs north from the Grand Colombier there are superb views to Mont Blanc and the Eastern Alps in clear conditions.

CYCLING

Quiet roads, good surfaces and generally gentle gradients make this a superb area for cycling.  Off-road trails centre on Plan d’Hotonnes and Brenod.   The Tour de France passed through the village in 2016 and passed very close by in 2017.

SKIING

Closest is at Plan d’Hotonnes (7 kilometres) with 10 lifts for downhill skiers, ideal for beginners or for brushing up your skiing before going on to a bigger resort.  Plan d’Hotonnes is a wonderful centre for cross-country skiing and for snow shoe treks.  A biathlon track (skiing and shooting) has been created here which can be used winter and summer (on roller skis.)  It is not at all unusual to see people skiing along the roads in mid-summer (traffic is that quiet).  Lots more trails to explore at Brenod, Lachat, Hauteville etc.

TENNIS

The all weather courts at Plan d’Hotonnes are looking a bit sad, but new courts have been built at Champagne en Valromey , others at Champ d’Or.

SWIMMING

Outdoor pools at Champ d’Or and Champagne en Valromey, indoor at Hauteville.  At Virieu Le Grand there is a super Lake for swimming with bar open in season.

FISHING

There is a lovely reed bordered lake at Songieu, which is a beautiful place to sit even if one doesn’t catch anything!
